Friends of Fetlar Kirk

About us

Friends of Fetlar Kirk are a small group of people from the Island of Fetlar, and the wider Shetland community, who maintain and run the only kirk left on Fetlar after they collectively purchased the building from the Church of Scotland in December 2021.

Maintenance is fully funded by member contributions and donations, as well as grants applied for through official channels

Friends of Fetlar Kirk is a registered charity and is led by five trustees who meet regularly to discuss finances, maintenance issues and community outreach.

Latest Projects

Our Trustees have recently raised money for emergency repairs to the combs on the ceiling due to large chunks of plaster falling from the edges. This was achieved through various grants and donations, as the damage was not covered under insurance.

The trustees are also working on raising funds for planned changes to the vestry at the back of the kirk, and much needed repairs to the roof and rooflight. In conjunction with a Listed Building Architect, plans have been drawn up to create a disabled toilet with better disabled access in the current vestry. The kirk currently has no toilet, creating a barrier for visitors who would like to spend longer periods in the kirk and surrounding area.
